The first screen decides if people keep scrolling
Research on web first impressions has found that people start judging a page's visual appeal within roughly the first twentieth of a second. You can't explain much in that time — but you can make sure nothing on the first screen works against you.
Answer three questions, in order
A first screen has to say what this is, who it's for and why it's worth staying — in that order. “Family eye care, with Saturday appointments” beats “Your vision, our passion” every time, because the visitor can act on it.
Everything else — your story, your awards, your process — can wait for the sections below. The first screen only has to earn the scroll.
Clarity beats cleverness
One strong headline, one honest sub-line and one obvious action out-perform a rotating carousel of ideas. Carousels feel like they say more, but most visitors only ever see the first slide.
Write the headline in the words your customers use when they describe the problem, not the words you use internally. If your clients say “flyers”, don't call it “marketing collateral”.
Speed is part of the design
A beautiful hero that takes four seconds to appear on a phone is a blank screen to most visitors. Compress images, avoid autoplaying video above the fold, and make sure the headline is real text, not part of a picture, so it renders immediately and search engines can read it.
Google's Core Web Vitals measure exactly this — how quickly the main content appears and whether the layout jumps around while loading. They're worth checking on any site you pay for.
Give one obvious next step
Book, call, get a quote, see the menu — pick the one action that matters most and make it the only bright button on the first screen. Secondary actions can exist, but they should look secondary.
If the top of the page needs a second read, you've already lost the first.
Takeaway
Say what, who and why. Load fast on a phone. Offer one clear next step. Then get out of the way.
